Presto Bunny-o!

So, I thought I'd blog about my rabbit today. In May of last year, I started babysitting for a lady in my ward. Personally, it's good pay, and I'm not asking for more. I save a little bit, spend a little bit (maybe more than a little bit). But then I thought, 'What if I saved up for a pet? Would Momma Bear let me have one?'

So I asked. And we went looking. I love animals, as most of you know, and so I usually go to the pet shelter, where there be lots of little critters just waitin' for ya (or rather, me)! But this time, I was too hasty, and went to a little petshop called 'Bird World/Pet Village'. It's like HEAVEN to me!!! I have often told my friends if you left me with a never-ending bag of jelly beans, unlimited supply of water, and unlimited goldfish (the cheesy crackers, not the animal), and left me in that pet store, I WOULD LIVE. That's how much I love pet stores.

So we went 'window shopping', so to speak, on animals. Originally, I was looking for a ferret. I thought they were the cutest things (don't ask why), and so I was going to save up for one of those. But see, they're a little more expensive than I thought. Plus the cage (which is HUGE), and food, and toys... yeah, it was a big goal for me, but something I was willing to work for.

We get to this shop, and I realize how pricey these things are and everything, and I'm kind of doing a double-check. Will I be willing to be responsible for this? Can I afford to pay for food? Would I be willing to put up with the STINK these animals create? There were alot of things to take into consideration, seeing as The Big Kahuna has BAD animal hair allergies. Dogs have to be OUTSIDE, and we have to keep up on vacuuming in my house. But see, no one goes in my room, hardly ever, so I didn't worry about keeping it in my room. But you have to let 'em out and play.... yeesh, there was a lot to think about. I had seen my own brothers promise to take responsibility for animals, and fail, and that hurt me. Those animals ended up getting out of the yard and they were gone. For. Good. It made me terribly sad, and I didn't want to make that mistake.

So, anyway, we're in this shop, and they have Dwarf Bunnies. Just TWO. A black one, and a gray one. We asked someone if we could hold one of them, and when they said yes, I picked up the black one. It was so soft, and just so darn cute. So me and my mom start asking questions. Yes, I have done a little research on animals, so I semi-know what I'm doing. He shows us the food, the toys, the cages. I had money--enough to buy the rabbit, some food and a waterbottle. But that was it. I asked if he would put the rabbit on 'hold', because I knew I loved that rabbit, and I WOULD HAVE IT!!!! So I bought it. They don't do 'hold' or 'lay away' anymore, because people came in and said, "Oops, just kidding. I don't want it anymore", and the animal was taken off said 'lay away'.

So I walked away with that rabbit. My mother was shaking her head, and I could see her eyes saying, "WHAT HAVE I DONE?!" I got my baby bunny in June (I think), and I was happy. Yes, I am still taking care of her, and I just LOVE her to death. She is quite a bit bigger, and cute as ever.

There were many names running through my head when I got her. Midnight, Thumper, Bugs, the usual. But I didn't want the usual. I wanted something... unusual. Well, as it turns out, I just so happened to have watched WALL-E. I loved the little short at the beginning, so guess what? I named her PRESTO!!!

Her nickname is Presto 'Houdini', because she somehow manages to get out of her cage, whether by charm or knocking it over and spilling the bedding ALL. OVER. THE PLACE. Drives me nuts sometimes. But like I said, I just love her, and though many a-time my mother has tried to convince me to get rid of her, I just can't.

  1. i knew a family that had two pet bunnies that were just like kittens; meaning they used a litter box, and ate and drank out of food bowls, etc. they basically had free roam of the house. who knew? oh - and does this mean you wouldn't want my dog? i need to find a new home for her... :(
